Myasthenia Gravis (MG) Awareness Month
Awareness campaigns are a way of drawing attention to often overlooked diseases. The Myasthenia Gravis (or MG) campaign is a valid case in point; although MG is not particularly well known or understood, its effects are widespread and devastating to those it does affect. Even though you may never have heard of it, MG is in fact the commonest disorder of neuromuscular transmission (nerves telling muscles how to move) with between 30,000 and 60,000 sufferers in the United States alone. Sufferers exhibit symptoms of muscle weakness and general fatigue and the disease affects any part of your body that are driven by muscles, and so of course this encroaching weakness can cause many symptoms, from the distressing to the life threatening.
