Serena Williams, champion and professional tennis player, underwent emergency treatment in 2011 after she developed Pulmonary Embolism (PE) from Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)?

Pulmonary Embolism, commonly referred to as PE, is the sudden blockage of a major blood vessel in the lungs, usually from a blood clot. It is highly suspected that she developed a PE as a result of DVT due to a recent foot injury and a long cross-country flight. If left untreated, the mortality rate of a Pulminary Embolism is roughly 30%.
